A Successful Outing is One Where a Good Time is Had by All, Including You, the Organizer

This year, choose Province Lake Golf Course for your annual golf outing, and let us help you make the event a great success, not just for your guests, but for you, the person who runs the tournament.

For starters, your guests will be excited about our scenic lakeside setting and rolling terrain that provide great views from tee boxes and greens. It's just downright fun for players to try our risk-reward doglegs and take on a few water adventures. And we have six sets of tees here, so golfers with any handicap or skill level have an enjoyable and exciting round.  Province Lake Golf has been voted #1 Course in New England for Women in and we host several women’s tournaments throughout the year.

Here are answers to some of the questions you might have about holding an outing with us:

  • How big a group can Province Lake handle? We hold outings and tournaments for groups of all kinds and sizes: Businesses entertaining customers, charities raising funds, groups of friends and family holding a get-together. You name it, we can do it for you. We are equipped to handle up to 120 players.
  • What about pricing? Group and tournament rates are available upon request and depend upon date, day of the week, time of the event and number of participants that you have in mind. pdfCLICK HERE FOR TOURNAMENT PRICING.
  • What are the facilities like? Many tournaments elect to have a delicious meal following their round on our beautiful patio.  The Patio seats 120 easily and can accommodate up to 150.  Indoors, the restaurant at Province Lake seats 75-80. Our new addition “The Province Lake Room” and a joining deck can accommodate up to 150.  This is a great option if the weather isn’t cooperating.
  • What are your services like?    We have a bag drop where our staff will help your guests handle their bags. We offer tools and templates to assist you in contacting your participants and organizing your event.  We also offer scoring, pairing, handicapping, and personalized cart signs. We will make up your sponsor signs and contest signs for an additional fee. We have some of the best practice facilities in New England, where your guests can warm up before their round. If you're interested in awarding prizes from our pro shop, note that we offer a 10 percent discount on all merchandise to tournament organizers and in some cases to tournament guests as well.
  • What will I serve? After a round on our outstanding course, your golfers will be hungry for great food. We offer attractive tournament and dinner packages in our restaurant and/or outside on our picturesque patio overlooking Province Lake. Enjoy a buffet or barbecue or even a sit-down dinner at your awards lunch or banquet.
  • Can I hold a meeting or seminar, too? Because of our excellent meeting facilities, Province Lake is an excellent destination for corporate golf outings. We invite business groups from Boston, Providence, R.I., Portsmouth, N.H., and Portland, Maine, to consider having a meeting plus golf at our club.

For businesses or groups of golfers coming from out of town, we can recommend a variety of local inns and resorts, excellent places for members of your group to stay overnight or for a weekend.

Province Lake actively solicits tournament inquiries throughout the season, and often assists groups in filling tee times with our club members and patrons from the general public, particularly for charity-based events. Please call our Pro Shop at (207) 793-4040 to discuss your tournament and outing needs.

Province Lake Origins

Province Lake Origins

Province Lake Golf was originally built in 1918 as a 9-hole course along the shores of Province Lake by Joseph Emery and his friends and business associates. Emery, a native of Dover, N.H., served as president of Lord & Taylor in New York City and visited Province Lake each summer. The original course was designed by Lawrence Van Etten, who laid out a number of courses on the East Coast, including a course at Deal Country Club in New Jersey and the original Wykagyl Course in New Rochelle, N.Y.

In 1988, a second nine was built, designed by renowned East Coast architect Brian Silva. Silva's work includes the Captains Course and Cape Cod National in Brewster, Mass., Black Creek, outside Chattanooga, Shaker Hills in Harvard, Mass., and Cyprian Keyes Golf Club in Boylston, Mass.

Although the back nine is shorter than the front, it is a more challenging set of holes based upon tighter fairways, smaller landing areas, and the water hazards that were introduced. Over the years, many other improvements have been made in our irrigation and layout. We've also renovated many of the original buildings on the property.

Blending Past & Future

Blending Past & Future

Province Lake Blends the Past and the Future of Golf in "One Scenic 18".

The first hole is a 400-yard par-4 from the back tees (237 yards from the front), which makes for a good opener. The generous fairway helps you start your game with relaxation. The 2nd hole (461 yards from the back and 330 from the front) is a long straightaway. The hole is lined with tall fescue on the left, which gives it extra definition and the green can be reached in two offering an early birdie or even eagle attempt.

One of the most outstanding holes on the front nine is the 6th, a par-5 nicknamed "Lakeside Belle." Pictured here to the left, it measures 530 yards from the back and 327 from the front. It's a challenging hole which travels along beautiful Province Lake.

The par-4 8th, playing at 382 yards from the back and 276 from the front, is the well-known "Hour Glass" fairway. There you hit to a fairway with a wide-open landing area, which narrows slightly and then becomes wider again. A brook runs along the right hand side and then crosses the fairway about 275 yards from the back tees. "You'll want to hit as close as you can to that point, and then make your second shot over the creek and up to the elevated green."

Every Hole is Different

Every Hole is Different

You've probably heard this said before about golf courses: "Every hole is different." But our back nine certainly fits that expression in a way that few others can.Take the 11th, a breathtaking par-3, which is 175 yards from the back and 113 from the front. You'll be hitting downhill to a huge green where the view is stupendous. There's a gorgeous sighting of the lake behind the green. As a matter of fact, you can see Province Lake from fourteen of the eighteen holes.

The 16th, 17th and 18th holes are truly a test of accuracy and strategy, featuring out-of-bounds areas on both sides of the fairways.

"Temptation," the 17th, is a big dogleg left par-4 (382 yards from the back and 229 from the front). The thrill is hitting the green with your approach shot. The green is very large - 6,000 square feet. Take heed of the bunker behind the green and the water on the left. If you've got the long shot, you can take a risk-reward blast over the trees on the left aiming straight to the green. But cautious players may want to drive to the center of the fairway, and then hit a 150-yard approach to the green.

"All Who Visit…Return…"

USGA governs all rules except for the following local rules:

  • Ball Rule: Posted in the Pro Shop daily.
  • A ball which crosses a public road and comes to rest beyond that road is out of bounds, even though it may lie on another part of the course.
  • Full swing and stance relief may be taken from the ledge in the 18th fairway.
  • Rocks in bunkers may be considered removable obstructions (Appendix I - 5B).
  • Any ball coming to rest in an environmentally sensitive area such as flower beds may be lifted without penalty and placed no closer to the hole with full swing and stance relief within two club lengths of the original resting place.
