It is with a heavy heart, lengthy internal debates and dialogue we feel the need to announce the cancellation of the 2019 Turkey Trot.
The Turkey Trot has been PLG's signature closing event for many years, summing up season after season of golf with a charitable outing where all proceeds and donations made that day were distributed to local area food pantries and food banks. Over the years the organizers and sponsors worked hard to ensure families in great need had a resource to turn to; this event being a big part of supporting this effort.
The dialogue through the season had been to restructure the event, change the dates, change the format and many other options to ensure a successful fundraiser. The later date and corresponding closure of the course remained as it was because it has been historically the closing event.
Nature has sometimes given us wet, cold and even snow flurry conditions during play. Members, non members and charitable participants have long set aside a day of "comfortable" play in lieu of raising funds for this great event.
Last year with miserable cold and wet weather we saw a decline in participants and donations and sadly this seems to have carried through to 2019.
As we work to complete the very long journey back from the devastating events that led to the loss of our complex we have and will remain committed to not only be a golf course but a member of a community we are so proud of. We will stand behind events like the annual Memorial Day Outing, The Jimmy Fund Tournament, The Turkey Trot and many other tournaments PLG provides free or discounted pricing for to raise monies for the many worthwhile causes we all hold dear.
To the avid golfer it may seem we have set aside play in lieu of other pursuits but the vision of PLG has and remains to be more than just golf and a valued member of the surrounding communities, giving back as much as we feel you all give us.
Sadly, it seems we are battling nature this year as we announce the cancellation of the 2019 Turkey Trot. Those who have already made donations will be contacted individually to choose to leave their donation in place or have it returned by volunteer organizers who represent each recipient group.
Canceling the event that celebrates the end of the season and the symbol of so much generosity weighs heavily on our hearts. If you choose to remain a donor we will gladly accept and distribute any food donation Sunday the 27th to the organizations who were scheduled to receive them. If you choose to make a donation in lieu of play of $100.00 (the original tournament fee) all donations will be distributed to those charities and we are happy to provide donors with two golf vouchers valid for any weekday or weekend afternoon in the 2020 season.
As we did last year, PLG will also be donating to the charities to help offset this much needed event.
Though many are willing to brave the wet and cold and forgo personal comfort we do understand that it is beyond the capability of some of our older members or those who travel south which we do understand.
The Bistro will be open and accepting donations at noon Sunday the 27th of October. We will have an area for food donations and a staff member can collect any monetary donations in exchange for your Golf Vouchers.
The PLG website has a link to the Feed A Family initiative begun last year. Though you will not receive golf vouchers it is also another great way to help families in need. In order to receive golf vouchers we do ask you donate a minimum of $100.00.
